I wrote a Windows service for Exchange message waiting indicator.

Currently, I have the application running at Glen Cove School District
for about a year now servicing over 250 voicemail accounts and the
wait time for the light is 10-15 seconds. In addition the application
uses minimal system resources and is transparent to End-Users. There’s
nothing complicated about the service and does not require
administrative or End-user intervention. It simply runs as a Window’s
service and is administered with the desktop client for onetime
configuration (Set it and forget it).

In addition, I was able to save the district over $60,000 by using
Exchange 2007 unified message appose to buying Cisco Unity voicemail
    system.
