A colleague brought this post from the Pro-Exchange blog in Belgium to my attention.  Ilse lists the steps in detail (with screenshots) that are required to get Outlook Anywhere and Autodiscover to work with a wildcard certificate.  Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 4 added support to the POP and IMAP services for wildcard certificates so we are covered here.

The key item to take away from his post is that you cannot use the Enable-OutlookAnywhere cmdlet to set the external hostname to *.comany.com.  The command will fail with an invalid hostname error.  The missing step to getting this to work is to use the Set-OutlookProvider cmdlet to set the parameters for the Autodiscover service so that the proper Outlook Anywhere settings are returned to the client.   Microsoft has a section in the Exchange 2007 documentation that references the steps that Ilse is illustrating.

The hot topic of the day for Exchange is the release of Rollup 5 for Exchange 2007 SP1. A laundry list of fixes (48 in all). Some are worth mentioning:

  • 949968 Unified Messaging does not handle the diversion header correctly in Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1
  • 954197 Exchange 2007 CAS cannot copy the OAB from the OAB share on Windows Server 2008-based Exchange 2007 CCR clusters
  • 957978 The OAB generation is unsuccessful and Event IDs 9328 and 9373 are logged in the Application log in a Windows Server 2008-based Exchange 2007 Single-Copy cluster environment

Looks like a couple good fixes to address Windows 2008 compatibility not to mention the UM diversion header fix.
